something i would like to see, is the US, Europe, Russia, and China
all teaming up together to clean up the trash island in the middle of
    the ocean.

You you seen this concept boat that "eats" garbage?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6rwh3X9HxU

It looks like it could remove 2-3 tonnes of floating debris per hour once
it's made a reality. Imagine what a whole fleet of these could do!

That is what I would be afraid of. :(

I think the idea behind the boats is if they clean the garbage out of the rivers, then it won't ultimately get to the ocean. They'd have to be huge boats to tackle what is in the ocean. Also, the garbage islands we see and hear about only account for a small amount of the plastic that is in the
ocean. A lot more of it gets washed up on beaches, then pulled back in,
over and over again, or it winds up on the ocean floor.

I think both need to be done, at least right now. Take care of the trash that's already in the ocean as well as try and limit what goes in there.

These boats only tackle floating debris, so even more needs to be done to address trash under the water including "micro plastics" which are now prevalent even in the arctic oceans:

Curious as to your thoughts on how this happens. Is it as "simple" as the individual cutting down on plastics use, or does the data show that this is
    an "industrial waste" problem?

Admittedly, even though I take the problem seriously by cutting back on plastics, for example, when I do use plastics, I'm not actually sure where
they end up after I put them into the recycle bin. If someone told me that
they had proof that my recycle-ables ended up in the landfill (or the ocean), I'd be angry, but not surprised.

At least 15 years, or so, ago - when we began recycling programs in my area, there was great talk in the local papers about how much of an impact we were seeing with regards to the reduction of the amount of garbage being added to the local landfill. I was excited, until a year or so later I saw that we
were now - apparently - taking rubbish from other states, for revenue, in
order to "ease [their] landfill burdens". Chalk one up for local government intervention.

In my area, hard plastics/containers (except for black

Probably both. A couple of jobs ago the company I worked for was very
bullish about "zero waste to landfil" from our location. Part of this included removing the garbage & recycling bins from everyone's desks.

Now if you wanted to throw something out, you had to get up from your desk
and go to a nearby central location and throw your item into one of 4 colour coded bins. Waste, Compost, Paper or Plastics.

All of this was then picked up by a "waste management" company and properly recycled. Any actual garbage is then sent on to a "waste-to-energy" plant where they use it to generate electricity:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste-to-energy_plant

Canada will ban the use of certain single use plastics by the end of this year, including:

    Grocery checkout bags
    Straws
    Stir sticks
    Six-pack rings
    Plastic cutlery
Food takeout containers made from hard-to-recycle plastics

This doesn't yet affect packaging, so that head of lettuce at the grocery store is still going to be wrapped in plastic, and things like bottles
of water & pop/soda are also unaffected.

I'd like to see an initiative like this happen at the local level in my area
    - maybe some sort of recognition or other incentive for this type of action.

One setback that I observed in my area, during the "COVID lockdowns", were a seemingly substantial increase in the use of plastics by restaurants. Whereas one could normally eat using glassware and stainless utensils, everything
here seemingly shifted to styrofoam boxes and plastic utensils, straws,
[often] plastic condiments and packaging, etc... I wonder if anyone else noticed a similar behaviour in their locale. Granted, I realise the solution
to my "problem" is to cook at home :-P.

I don't know that cutting down on plastic use will do it alone. As you go
on to point out, I am also not just dumping my plastics anywhere. The recycleable ones go in the recyle bin and the others (that are recycleable
but no one seems to want them) go in the trash. Neither should be winding
up in the waterways, but somehow they are.

Admittedly, even though I take the problem seriously by cutting back on plastics, for example, when I do use plastics, I'm not actually sure
where they end up after I put them into the recycle bin. If someone
told me that they had proof that my recycle-ables ended up in the
landfill (or the ocean), I'd be angry, but not surprised.

Supposedly, a few years back, we were selling/giving some of our
recycleable plastic to China assuming they were actually recycling it but
they really were not. I heard that in relation to some of the early
"Garbage Island" reports I heard. HOWEVER, even if that is 100% true, they must not have been the only source. Some of the things that have been
found in the oceans date back to the 1950's and are believed to have been in the ocean since before sending recycling to China would have happened.

Also, although one in the Pacific is the most well-known, there are others
that are far from China's borders.

At least 15 years, or so, ago - when we began recycling programs in my area, there was great talk in the local papers about how much of an

Some people don't like it when others don't trust their government to do
the right thing. This is one example of why they don't. Finding out that
some of my recycling or garbage may have been dumped into the local
    waterway would be another.

While I don't do it, I know people who actually wash and reuse the ones

What are they replacing these with?

Knowing how little winds up being recycled these days (because China
increased their standards for what they'll take), I tend to assume that most recycling that's not pristine and easy to recycle is going to wind up in a landfill somewhere anyway.

But I wonder if those boxes are coated in wax, and thus compostable.

Not that every place has composting in the way that most every place has recycling.

Knowing how little winds up being recycled these days (because China

We had that mad splash when recycling first started being a thing. All sorts of programmes that used or promised to make use of recycled waste, plastic or otherwise. Then everyone got on board, there was so much going to recycle that they couldn't cope with it. The value of it fell through the floor, unable to sustain even the collection costs. Some of the recyclers shut down, the collectors went broke, and most of it started going back to landfill..

Canada will ban the use of certain single use plastics by the end of
    this year, including:

    Grocery checkout bags

Long gone here, but we replaced them with 10c reusable bags, and I suspect plent of people just buy a few more and throw them away...

    Plastic cutlery

Not that I'm often near any kind of plastic cutlery, being a closet hermit ;) But I see cutlery being replace with bamboo derivitives. Even kitchen utensils seem to be going this way. Just don't leave them in standing water though they tend to distort.

The last time I got takeout I had the coated cardboard box container,

These are not really single-use in my house. If they make it here without holes being poked in them, they get reused as garbage bags. Our grocery stores were taking them back for recycling, until COVID started. Now that
I am VAXed and shopping in person again, I need to see if they still do.

I reuse plastic and paper bags until they fall appart. They are great
to move the horses' food in manageable quantities to the barn :-) I
also reuse them as garbage bags, but I prefer dogfood and horsefood
    bags for the garbage myself.

Yes, I use the larger plastic bags for the kitchen garbage, but use the
smaller shopping bags for my office room and bed room. I use the shopping
bags also for carrying my not-recycleable-at-home paper trash (envelopes,
junk mail, etc) to the office, where we can recycle it.

Personally, I don't really need a knife or fork when I eat my
lunches (a spoon pretty much does it all), but after looking at
the uco solution, all one needs to do is "spoon" a fork and
spoon together (they'd fit on top of each other), and add a
knife if desired, and just use a bit of velcro to secure
everything together. Toss into lunch bag. Simple. Reusable.
    Avoids anything to lanfill.

There were definatly moments where humanity acted selfishly. however,
everyone world wide, instantly conformed to new behaviour patterns of social distancing, wearing masks (for the most part), and using hand sanitizer
almost overnight. thats pretty amazing if you really think about it. when has that ever happened before world wide? The doctors who were developing the drugs, had worked with other doctors from different countries to help create cures that would have taken 10 years or more to create and test. all the
riots and social unrest helps to point humanities attention to socially hidden issues that are now coming to the surface to be dealt with. There is actaully great potential to transform humanity as those issues are now on the surface and has everyones attention. I may be optimistic, but that is probably just

Probably both. A couple of jobs ago the company I worked for was very bullish about "zero waste to landfil" from our location. Part of this included removing the garbage & recycling bins from everyone's desks.

Now if you wanted to throw something out, you had to get up from your
desk and go to a nearby central location and throw your item into one
of 4 colour coded bins. Waste, Compost, Paper or Plastics.

San Francisco was pretty bullish about that, and the building management was doing some level of trash-shaming and letting tenants know when they weren't in compliance with city regulations.

The waste management company one county down was amazing - they invested in state of the art reclaimation systems and boasted of huge percentages of recyclable materials going to their recycling facilities - even when tossed into their garbage cans. And they charged less!

Compare with the older legacy companies that'd rather put it the onus back
on the consumer and fine them for non-compliance.

I just have a multi-tool set with spoon, knife and fork all in one. YOu can disassemble it and it with it, then you wash it and assemble it and put it back in the suitcase. It is quite handy.

When I was in scouts, I had a utensil set that sounds similar. ;) It may
have been some kind of military surplus.

Now if you wanted to throw something out, you had to get up from your
desk and go to a nearby central location and throw your item into one
    of 4 colour coded bins.

San Francisco was pretty bullish about that, and the building
management was doing some level of trash-shaming and letting tenants
know when they weren't in compliance with city regulations.

The end result was kind of funny. A lot of people just went out to the
dollar store and bought these tiny trash cans for their desk. It did seem kind of silly that each time you blew your nose at your desk you had to parade your soiled tissue through the office to throw it out. At least this way you can make one trip a day instead of several.

The waste management company one county down was amazing - they
invested in state of the art reclaimation systems and boasted of
huge percentages of recyclable materials going to their recycling facilities - even when tossed into their garbage cans. And they
    charged less!

This company was pretty good, there was this huge company wide meeting about it touting how awesome everything is. They kind of educated us on how the whole processed worked. I found it interesting, the people in finance seemed a bit ansi I wanted to get back to their desks.

We were a (junk) food manufacturing business, so a large portion of our "waste" ended up as pig feed which we sold to one company. Everything
else went to this waste management company where it was used to generate electricity with no air pollution. I would imagine the money they got from selling the food waste offset the cost of using this zero-waste-to-landfill service.

My percention is that everybody world wide lost their minds and started screwing up.

Maybe it is different everywhere else, but we have had State sponsored demonstrations mid-pandemic,
people wearing their masks on their chins instead of on their noses, party areas packed full of
to their limits. So yeah, it has been demonstrated that people is very good at blindly doing what
they are told - the Government told everybody to wash their hands and have a mask, so everybody
did, but then they did everything necessary to destroy any potential benefit from doing so.

The speed with which vaccines were developed suggests to me that they either had the work done in
advance or that they rushed it. Or both.

Riots suck. If you want to have them for all the 'political awareness' they generate then I
suggest you to take all the Spanish rioters and have all the 'political awareness' they generate

There was a lot of work done in advance, dating back to the original SARS outbreak of 2003, where it first looked like a coronavirus vaccine of some sort might be needed. And MERS, several years later, would have given an additional push. So the vaccine developers did have a significant head start to work from, and had existing technologies to tweak to suit SARS-COV2, the virus we're now dealing with.

Its all good, i know i can be naive about society in general. I usually think people act out of their better natures. However there has been alot of the opposite of that as well. My gut feeling though, is this all happens for a reason. Its a guess but it could be due to a karmic adjustment that the whole planet is going through, with the end goal of enlightenment. In order to get
to the "Golden age" that is talked about in all the world relgions / mystery schools, a time of "The Dark Night of the Soul" has to be experinced first in order to drag to the surface all the junk that is hidden underneath. Which means facing the true ugliness that is human nature right now, so we can
evolve to a high level. or at least that is my hope. :-)

I do wonder about the efficacy of spending x amount of money for that versus
x amount of money for programs to reduce the amount of trash we're putting

On the other hand, fancy ocean vacuums are _way_ cooler.

These are not really single-use in my house. If they make it here without holes being poked in them, they get reused as garbage bags. Our grocery
stores were taking them back for recycling, until COVID started. Now that
I am VAXed and shopping in person again, I need to see if they still do.

    Plastic cutlery

While I don't do it, I know people who actually wash and reuse the ones
that they buy at the store (which are made of harder plastic than the ones
    from fast food places).

What are they replacing these with?

One of my nieces did a science project re: what "green" components could be used to make drinking straws that were actually useful and would biodegrade
(or be recycleable). IIRC, she ultimately won second in state with that project.

    Not at all.

Detachable? Interesting. I always wondered how those models

    I like this design myself:

The fork serves as the "case" for the knife/spoon.

But.. if they are plastic.. then, maybe not such a great idea

What are they replacing these with?

The last time I got takeout I had the coated cardboard box container,
but they were still giving out plastic forks. Wal-Mart is now selling disposable forks, knives & spoons made out of wood, so I have a feeling we'll see more of those:

It is interesting how some things circle back to how they used to be. I
can remember seeing some wooden cutlery as a kid, although it was usually
    only used for baking. :)

I remember as a kid we had all of these "chip trucks" that sell french fries out of, usually parked near beaches and in parking lots around town. They would give you these small wooden forks to eat your fries with:

Or both.

Riots suck. If you want to have them for all the 'political awareness' they generate then I
suggest you to take all the Spanish rioters and have all the 'political awareness' they generate
    for yourselves.

When I was in scouts, I had a utensil set that sounds similar. ;) It
may have been some kind of military surplus.

One of those with the little round hooks that hook them all together?

I snicker when I see titanium sporks at the camping store for 10x the price
of a scouts utensil kit. If I need to save 50 grams of weight, I'm better
off buying the cheap kit, putting down the sandwich and pocketing the cost difference. :)

Wait, that was literally your take away?

There were definatly moments where humanity acted selfishly. however, everyone world wide, instantly conformed to new behaviour patterns of social distancing, wearing masks (for the most part), and using hand sanitizer almost overnight. thats pretty amazing if you really think
about it. when has that ever happened before world wide? The doctors who were developing the drugs, had worked with other doctors from different countries to help create cures that would have taken 10 years or more to create and test. all the riots and social unrest helps to point
humanities attention to socially hidden issues that are now coming to
the surface to be dealt with. There is actaully great potential to transform humanity as those issues are now on the surface and has everyones attention. I may be optimistic, but that is probably just my perspective on things. :-)

    Yer actually right.

I think a lot of people dropped the ball, but I'm sure there are those that think my way of doing things wasn't the right way to respond...

    Good perspective, rockstar.

The speed with which vaccines were developed suggests to me that they either had the work done in
advance or that they rushed it. Or both.

    Good perspective, rockstar.

of course you are also talking to a Metaphysican lol.
