I'm having a hard time finding a GUI based news-reader thats
not "binary-centric", meaning specialized for finding files
on Usenet, instead of reading news.
Does anyone have a good reccomendation for windows & linux?
I'm not interested in trying Thunderbird, or any other
client that has NNTP as an addon for a mail client, and
would like something standalone.

I've been seeing more and more communites on the web going back
to offering some sort of NNTP / Newsserver - heck, even my own
BBS has the ability to enable one - and it seems like a very
interesting protocol, but I'm having a hard time finding a GUI
based news-reader thats not "binary-centric", meaning specialized

I usually use tin if I read with a news server. Tin is a console app but I suppose it would run fine from the desktop also. I also use pan at times. Pan is a GUI app and works quite well in my experience.
I use both of those on linux but I'm not sure if those apps are available on windows or not.. probably.. they are both open source.

BTW, the one in Thunderbird is built-in, and not an addon AFAIK.

I often turned to tin, always liked it. Will have to check out Pan sometime. I have found Thunderbird's newsreader not bad too.

I haven't played around much with readers, I stick to slrn, it has good killfile logic. Which is a problem I have with Thunderbird, Usenet is a swap without a quick and simple killfile. Don't get me wrong
Thunderbird does have one just a pain to edit :)
