Does anyone have a good reccomendation for windows & linux?
I'm not interested in trying Thunderbird, or any other
client that has NNTP as an addon for a mail client, and
    would like something standalone.

I have this one installed when I feel like having a little
variety from the usual Thunderbird that I use:

    https://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/

It does a pretty good job in the quoting department and uses the
    sender's initials.

BTW, the one in Thunderbird is built-in, and not an addon AFAIK.

I usually use tin if I read with a news server. Tin is a console app but I suppose it would run fine from the desktop also. I also use pan at times. Pan is a GUI app and works quite well in my experience.

I use both of those on linux but I'm not sure if those apps are available on windows or not.. probably.. they are both open source.

I recommend the 'Pan' newsreader. Definitely for Linux and I think it

For Linux and OpenBSD, rtin works fine. It gets some time to get used to it, but if you are doing BBS is not a shock. Pan works fine too, and it is graphical.

    No idea about Windows.

This sounds like a trend I could get into. I used to enjoy Usenet back in the day, and newsgroups are a good way to read messages. Certainly beats those awful web interfaces. :)

While I'm not keen on NNTP for BBSing (because of last pointer issues when using multiple clients), I see a lot of potential for specific situations, or even for feeding a BBS. :)

I haven't played around much with readers, I stick to slrn, it has good killfile logic. Which is a problem I have with Thunderbird, Usenet is a swap without a quick and simple killfile. Don't get me wrong Thunderbird does have one just a pain to edit :)
