There have been some pseudo-attempts at AI chat doors in the past. Eliza was an older one, and Synchronet has 'The Guru' (I think). I haven't raelly looked into an AI chat bot, but I'm sure it could be done. It seems ChatGPT must have a web API, because I've seen someone set up a script or something that was using ChatGPT to reply to certain messages in another BBS message network.

I think someone had a bot that would post to some of the message areas as "Chad Gipiti" or something like that (ChatGPT)... I'd thought about doing what you are suggesting with a chat bot of "Elle Elim" (LLM) as the name, but would need a much smaller model so that it would be able to use CPU execution and not take a ton of memory. I hadn't really dug into it though. You'd really need to either make requests to an external service, or write your own terminal/console application to use as the chat bot itself, outside synchronet/js.

It's definitely doable though. That said, it could be easy to overwhelm a system's resources, or incure some significant costs.

Eliza was pretty good for her time, used to be a few versions kicking around when I first hit pooters at high school, but she's showing her age. There's also a pretty long in the tooth AICHAT which simulates chatting with a Sysop.

AIchat has customisable chat options and statements, but if you get it off track or confused it will pop out something like "my hover craft is full of eels". I used to use it as, chat to co-sysop. I've considered trying to rebuild it as a help system...

I don't wanna speak too soon, or anything, but I've been working on implementing the openai API and feeding it the Mystic docs, whatsnew.txt and other sources and only respond with answers from that dataset.

If I continue to do well with it, I'd like to wrap it in bots for Matrix, Discord and Mystic to let users ask Mystic questions... I could throw it on GitHub is anyone wants to help; I'm just learning the api thru Python.

I suppose you've amassed a bit of a collection of helpful posts, too, if memory serves.

So, certainly, it _would_ be awfully neat if there could be a moderately useful implementation.

Though wrong answers are always a problem, of course.

I mean, of _course_ you should throw it on GitHub so people can look at it, even if no one ends up helping. :)

(No pressure, though, but if you're willing to have it out there, then it seems likely to be a net positive.)

There was a similar synchronet bot. It was intriguing, but was patently
wrong some times - not something you want in a support board.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for it, I think it's the direction support

Depending on the LLM, yes... Many/most LLMS run on GPU hardware, and the good ones need a card with 16gb or more ram on that GPU in order to run. Even a "low" memory, CPU based LLM will generally want at least a couple cores and a few gigs of ram, so if you're running multiple conversations it's entirely possible to hit those kinds of limits.

My fault. I double cheked and it was Xibalba (Enigma's flagship board). One of the doors is the actually chatGPT integration. It's just a
client, so you can chat like in the web. I believe though this could go far further.

Thanks for circling back, can't wait to check this out. Already have a ton

That explains why no one is doing this. Dedicate a peice of hardward

Alternatively you could just get credits at openai.com and go directly
through chatGPT's API. If you limited it to GPT3 the costs would be fairly minimal, around $0.002 for 750 words or so or 20 cents for 75,000 words and
you could just cap it at $10/month for safety.

Yeah, it gave a lot of wrong answers, which isn't good for people
looking for help and don't realize it's an AI bot.

Ec should have text at the top of messages saying that it was a ai generated message and might contain error.

    The first that that gave it away, was how "wordy" the messages tended to be, and it was just blabbering along. ^';

There really isn't enough food for it on a bbs message network...

No worries. Xibalba doesn't come with the most convenient URL, but still relatively easy to google so I assumed it shouldn't be a challenge.

Definitely blew away my expectations for a GPT interface on a BBS but got a long way to go before it replaces the web experienced with all of my past conversations on the left and the GPT 4 apps available from the drop down.
But it has me thinking about places one can take it. One challenge is the resolution / font size one usually uses on a BBS forces you to do to a metric tonne of scrolling to go back through the conversation.

echicken (sysop of Electronic Chicken BBS) seems to have written something for Synchronet to read messages from Synchronet's messagebases and have ChatGPT generate a response, then post its response to Synchronet's messagebase. This is possible because Synchronet allows scripting with JavaScript and provides access to its messagebases via JavaScript.
