I had a look at that model a while ago. Seems really nice! Maybe one day. My AcuRite temperature monitor still does the job for now I suppose. It's sort
of a morning habit to look at the outside temperature, NO INTERNET OR LOGIN REQUIRED. :)

My dad had an outdoor thermometer attached to the north-wall of
of every out-building on the farm property. It was his "thing".

One day when our refrigerator didn't seem to be keeping things
as cool as expected, I borrowed one of those thermometers and
used that to monitor the temps in the fridge. He blew a fit
when he discovered one of his precious $2 thermometers in there!

It was a sad (embarrassing) moment to see my dad so angry about
a missing thermometer when there were at least 3 others in use
(all presumably providing the same readings). His wife was
equally disappointed - considering it was SHE that was concerned
that the fridge may not be functioning properly.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out all the spare coins in
there and threw it at him saying "Go ahead. Why don't you go buy
    10 more thermometers!"

We have the 5-in-1 AcuRite in the back yard along with the internet receiver.

I really like being able to monitor our hyper-local weather, especially around here. We even have it attached to WeatherUndergound so our neighbours can look at the information if they want.

We're in the "green belt" and our local airport, where a lot of my city's weather is reported from, isn't. There are times when it will be dark & stormy "downtown", but where I live it's warm, dry and sunny - only a 15 or 20 minute drive away.

I do have to climb up there and take a look at it, it seems the rain sensor has stopped working. May need to clean it out or re-balance the unit.

True! I was always attracted to Weather for some reason... I like storms,
snow, etc. I look at the forecast a couple of times a day and get excited
when something out of the ordinary is on the horizon.

I liked your story about your dad. Funny how we each have our own "thing", even if it's a 2$ thermometer... Sometimes we attach importance to these little objects (or habits), however insignificant they may appear to be. Good for you for standing up to him. ;-)

I've used the WeatherUnderground app/website before. It's pretty neat! A few people around here were feeding data to it so it was nice to see what was happening around me.

I think you and I live close... I'm just across the river, but I was working
at the airport. Yes, the weather appears to be very local... Between the different parts of town it does seem to shift quite considerably!

I do have to climb up there and take a look at it, it seems the rain sensor has stopped working. May need to clean it out or re-balance the unit.

The new Tempest unit is all solid state so looks like any maintenance would
be very minimal... Mine is just a temperature sensor which I keep above the outside entrance with velcro. As a matter of fact, I just replaced the
battery yesterday after >1 years of use. I'm surprised it actually lasted throughout the winter! Battery consumption seems very minimal. I think it
sends out data only every 30 seconds or so.

I have a friend nearby who has one. They are not very accurate. The rainfall and wind sensors need work to be more accurate. Temp/humidity works okay.

I have the Ambient Weather 2902A. I believe they are currently on the C version. Very affordable station and it works very well. I've gone through
two of the Accurite stations. They last about a year or so then the sensor suite give it up.
