    I would love to. But that would be a long-distance call for
    me. Unless.. your system has one of those callback tricks to

    I do wonder who has a real, honest to God modem and non-VoIP phone line.

    Not that anyone would need a reason to do something nostalgic for the fun of it.

    I have a full-size USR Sportster 56k and Sportster IDSN in a box but opted to use the USR USB 56k for this (the white dongle one). The physical com port
    on my gateway machine is hooked to a ham radio TNC.

    I have one, I think. It is not VoIP within the house here. However, once
    it gets into the domain of the local utility provider, I suspect it is not
    all the old copper wire. They also supply the cable TV and cable Internet,
    so I suspect the old-fashioned bits on their side have all been replaced,
    too.
