My family is much the same. I am the exception being the only
one living about 260km away from the rest of them. Most of my
other relatives still reside within 30km of each other. Even
with that, there is little gatherings amongst them - except when
I hear someone had a milestone birthday - or in the rare case a
Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner gathering.

I don't chat with any of them via phone or email. They don't
seem to want to take the initiative and maintain the
relationship either. It seems to be good enough to call on a
birthday and play "catch up", but that's about it.

When my mom passed way (it's been 8 years now, bless her soul) I
had a handful of calls from my remaining aunts and a few cousins
a few days after. All of them pined about how difficult it must
be for me. None of them actually talked about my mom very much
at all - that is what I missed the most.

When my family moved to the country (where I am now) it was very
common for the locals to drop by for a drink and a chat. It
seemed to be a more happy time back then.

You'd think that'd be chicken dinner, but no... I don't even have numbers for any of them any more.. A few moves and unplanned phone replacements, I have nada. I don't think I'd be finding them on the interwebby thing either, you know its just a flash in the pan. ;)

You might be surprised what a simple google might turn up, or a
quick S)earch for a name in Facebook.

And.. even some obit searches could turn up someone you know and
provide closure to the matter. :/
