From Al@21:4/106.1 to All on Sat Oct 31 19:04:44 2020
    Hello All,

The sun has just gone down here a short while ago and a big beautiful full moon has just appeared over the mountains. I looks very halloween shining through a mist or maybe it's clouds. I suspect it will be a quiet halloween this year.

I wonder if anyone has done or seen any new halloween ansi? I don't have any ansi skills myself or I'd share.. :)

That's awesome, thanks for sharing.. :)

I think here in the BBS world stuff still needs to be no more than 80 characters wide or things start folding around. I see that g00r00 has been doing work to enable Mystic to use a longer or wider screen. I still use an 80 character terminal but I'll have to see if I can get a 30 row screen to work for me here. That would be nice.

    Ttyl :-),

I agree! I think going wider than 80 chars in ansi art (while incompatible with many BBS systems / terminals) it loses the charm. It's more like pixel art than ansi art. I always thought the charm of ANSI art was the constraints.

It's hard to get something to look good when you can only go 80 chars wide. Add enough width and you can copy a picture pixel to pixel (where a pixel is two block chars).

That's awesome, thanks for sharing.. :)

I think here in the BBS world stuff still needs to be no more than 80 characters wide or things start folding around. I see that g00r00 has beendoing work to enable Mystic to use a longer or wider screen. I still use an 80character terminal but I'll have to see if I can get a 30 row screen to workfor me here. That would be nice.

Oh man... you just reminded me. So, I saw over on ArakNet that Smooth is working on a 132 character theme. I'm sure he'll knock it out of the park and might get others excited to use that new format.

I've just been playing around with the Mystic new filenaming to use the different term sizes. (FILENAME.1.ANS or FILENAME.c132x30.ANS, etc...) and... I didn't realize there was an 80x30 option. I'll have to go look how that looks, but... I *am* interested in either the 132x32 or 80x30 if it doesn't make ANSI look too different...

Glad you mentioned that. I didn't know a longer screen was available at the same width. :P Hmmmmm...

I agree! I think going wider than 80 chars in ansi art (while
incompatible withmany BBS systems / terminals) it loses the charm. It's more like pixel art thanansi art. I always thought the charm of ANSI art was the constraints.

It's hard to get something to look good when you can only go 80 chars wide. Addenough width and you can copy a picture pixel to pixel (where a pixel is twoblock chars).

    Andrew

So I'm KIND OF with ya'll... and yes, I love the 80x24/25 that we all know and love... and have had in our minds as 'ANSI' forever... but I dunno. I like that 132x32 still keeps the ANSI - but might bring BBSing into a new chapter. Its 2020, theres still a BBS scene, albeit different... I'm kinda all about it.

Don't get ahead of yourself, Paulie - I don't know how to draw ANSI art for anything, and... that change would certainly create a - theres so much 80x25 ANSI out there, even if just for ideas... or ripping... or whatever, that swapping to a new width will really create a need for ANSI artists to design for the boards again; so we'll see how it goes.

I'm just stating that... I dunno; I could go for new. Heck, theres been 160xXXXX forever now... I kinda dig that it will be available to be viewed online, on the BBSes...

I'm sure theres some balance, where you can display a screen or 3 in wide width... and still stick to 80x24 for most. :P I hear ya. But I invite it, also.

<changed subject FYI but continuing the discussion>

Do any other BBSs support these screen sizes, or plan to? E.g. Enigma, Synchronet, WWIV, etc. Larger sizes are intriguing.

This may be a dumb question -- but what about a native mobile-sized screen? E.g flip the orientation, e.g. 15x80 -- or is that just ridiculous? I know BBSs are designed for desktop, but I've been using fTelnet over the web on my phone a lot, as well as Terminus (iOS/iPad).

This reminds me a lot of the early mid 2000's when I worked in web dev and we were first grappling with responsive break points and grid layout systems to make it easier *not* to have to design for every screen size :)

BBBS does. You can set the number of lines on your screen along with the width. I have mine set to 80x30 and it works well. Synchronet does also. I have never gone beyond 80x30 so I don't know if there is an upper or lower limit.

Telgard is another that you can use other than 80x25. I have used Telegard also with 80x30 with good results.

This may be a dumb question -- but what about a native mobile-sized screen? E. flip the orientation, e.g. 15x80 -- or is that just ridiculous? I know BBSs ar designed for desktop, but I've been using fTelnet over the web on my phone a lot, as well as Terminus (iOS/iPad).

It would be good if that was possible. I don't have a tablet so I only have a phone so I have never done much in the way of telnet because of the screen size but I see possibilities there.

This reminds me a lot of the early mid 2000's when I worked in web dev and we were first grappling with responsive break points and grid layout systems to make it easier *not* to have to design for every screen size :)

Those 80x25 BBS menus will likely be with us forever but if we could make message display size configurable it we be a definate plus.

WWIV does too, but is mostly optimized for 80x25. It still has default menus that were designed to work with 40cols too, as that was popular at the time when it started.

Synchronet will support any screen size I believe, WWIV also asks your screen size when you create an account.

The problem with having a lot of different screen sizes is you need a ton of different art to support each screensize to the full extent.

While you could just design for the lowest common denominator and just generated things like message editors take advantage of bigger screen sizes.

Terminal sizes are generally fluid these days, you can resize your xterm to whatever size you want. The hard part is making pregenerated graphics look any good at different sizes.

I don't see people writing out a million different main menu ansis to take advantage of different screen sizes, seems people don't even usually bother with making ascii menus to support non-ansi terminals these days (myself included).

If you're going to do away with 80x25 screen sizes, then make your bbs read the terminal window size paramater I say. make it fluid.

Though I absolutely love ANSI art and that's a big deal on my board, the idea of a BBS that works like a local ncurses/blessed/whatever type auto-sizing layout is pretty slick IMO.

That's a cool idea for sure. I'd thought about a way to be dynamic or even "generate" the UI at different sizes as well, e.g. a script that assmbles the menus from components, rather than one big file.

Or even responsive, so the components can shift
dynamically on re-size, like a grid layout where the "rules" are baked-in (e.g. bootstrap and collapsing columns, etc.)

I'd still like to make ANSIs with more than 16 colors, but I've not spent the effort to figure out what combination of software I'd need to make it work on Mystic BBS.

And _drawing_ the ANSIs does seem possible, though only with PabloDraw, and swapping out palettes. But then is that a format that can work with Mystic,
and MagiTerm or something else? And how do I differentiate which menu to show?

So that probably won't get done, especially since I'd likely be the only
person to use it. And maintaining multiple sets of menus does seem like a bother.

I suppose I'd do it if I had enough of a caller base of a certain type, but otherwise I'll just stick to the items that entertain me.

While I don't own any Apple products, I think their design ethos kind of got
to me, so I had a phase where I removed as many commands as I thought I reasonably could.

And I should probably do more, and in more areas. But I have no idea how a random new person would respond.

Mind you, it probably just wouldn't work, because random new person would respond by trying to visit on a phone, and that just doesn't work out well
