Shortwave is very different now. I used to listen a lot on a home made
crystal reciver I built in the 7th grade. About 1972 or 1973. Lots of
fun stuff back then. Nowadays it's mostly China, although the BBC has
restarted its wartime bureau and they broadcast a few hours a day to
Ukraine. It's all propaganda, and probably was back in the 70's. I
used to enjoy laying in bed at night and listening to latin music on my
crystal set. Radio Havanna was huge, Radio Moscow, always liked
listening to the "Happy Station" out of the Netherlands...good stuff
back then. I think the VOA is still on the air but I'd have to check.
LOADS and LOADS of doomsday preachers begging for cash.

I am guessing it is different for the same reasons that AM radio is very different now... FM radio and the internet have changed the landscape. I wonder if those doomsday preachers have valid licenses... I assume you need one to broadcast shortwave?

Nope. You just need the $$ to buy the time on WWCR and/or a couple other US stations. They will rent you airtime by the half hour. They hold the license, you supply the program to air. A lot of that is done via pre-recorded means and isn't live.

I used to visit Speedway for the time trials. Enjoyed eating donuts at Long's, and stopping at the Mug and Bun for dinner after a long day at
    the
track. Couple of other places I used to go, that are not there anymore, were Racer's Pizza in Brownsburg, and Jonathan Byrd's Cafeteria.

We have lived in or near Indy since 1966, I have never been to the race, I have been to qualifications and practice more times than I can count. My eldest son was almost born on Crawfordsville Rd when the 1980 race let out. We were stuck in trqaffic, it was 95 degrees and my wife started having contractions. No AC, my car was a 69 Pontiac Catalina back then...a police lady got us out of the traffic jam and headed toward the hospital...he was born the next day. Johnny Rutherford won that year. When it comes to auto racing I prefer drag races, I worked for the NHRA out ar Indianapolis Raceway Park for four years (79-83) as a time keeper. When the US Nationals would come to town I was a ticket sales person, and sometimes worked on the safety safari. Indianapolis Raceway Park also has one of the best asphalt 3/8 mile ovals in the country, my job on the oval track was to monitor the pit gates, and open and close access for the teams that were racing. I met Darrel Waltrip, Junior Johnson, and several other NASCAR drivers when they came there to race for the first time in a Sportsman series race. Must have been about 81 or 82.

    Regards,
