Shortwave is very different now. I used to listen a lot on a home made crystal reciver I built in the 7th grade. About 1972 or 1973. Lots of
fun stuff back then. Nowadays it's mostly China, although the BBC has restarted its wartime bureau and they broadcast a few hours a day to Ukraine. It's all propaganda, and probably was back in the 70's. I
used to enjoy laying in bed at night and listening to latin music on my crystal set. Radio Havanna was huge, Radio Moscow, always liked
listening to the "Happy Station" out of the Netherlands...good stuff
back then. I think the VOA is still on the air but I'd have to check. LOADS and LOADS of doomsday preachers begging for cash.
I am guessing it is different for the same reasons that AM radio is very different now... FM radio and the internet have changed the landscape. I wonder if those doomsday preachers have valid licenses... I assume you need
one to broadcast shortwave?
I worked in Franfort back in the early 1990's. KETC was one of my
largest customers, so I was at the capitol quite frequently. I also
made it out to Bell County, and out near Pineville doing a few IT jobs here and there. Almost got crushed by a coal truck coming out of
Corbin one night, he came down the mountain and didn't have any brakes.
I got out of his way with half a second to spare. I reckon he made it,
I didn't see him in the ditch any where.
Driving around in coal country can be tricky, although probably not as
tricky now as back then.
I used to visit Speedway for the time trials. Enjoyed eating donuts at
Long's, and stopping at the Mug and Bun for dinner after a long day at the track. Couple of other places I used to go, that are not there anymore,
were Racer's Pizza in Brownsburg, and Jonathan Byrd's Cafeteria.
Racer's became another pizza place that was also good, but the last time I
was in Brownsburg it was gone, too. I'd stay at the Red Roof off of Crawfordsville Road, which was cheap but usually clean... I think it got
dozed for one of the Interstate projects.
... Tell me, is something eluding you, Sunshine?
