My only experience with IRC was at this girl's place a long time ago
where she emancipated herself from her parents. She ended up renting a huge house with no posessions... except for a bed, a dining room table, and a Technics stereo system hooked up to a PC that was downloading
things called "MP3's" from various channels she was on. Thats all she
did, day and night. MP3's on IRC.

That was pretty much my experience with IRC as well, MP3s. I'd go on to various IRC channels and interact with various bots to download songs.

Some had a ratio where I could download two songs for every one that I uploaded. I remember one frustrating time where one this one bot had the song I wanted but everything I tried uploading was a duplicate.

That's when I raided my sister's room and used AudioGrabber to rip a few of her CDs so I could upload those.

At least back then you typically didn't have to worry about fake songs, though some of them were recorded off of the radio. One Coldplay track I still listen to I half expect to hear the radio announcer talking over the end of the track as that MP3 off of IRC was where I first heard it.

I never really got into that... I was happy with Rock 95, Q107 and 102.1 for any new stuff I wanted to hear and made cassette-recordings that were, to me, "temporary" until I bought the CD or whatever album a song was from.

Maybe I'm old, but the video, images seem unnecessary, and the fact that you can look back in history, kind of seems like a bad design. It's almost like a running forum than chat sometimes. It can be used as
chat, but also as a message board, like its half way between the two.

I'm not fond of Discord at all, proprietary and it seems they can decide which communities to shut down. Not where we should be heading.

I have not used Discord much so I come at this from a degree of ignorance. But from what I have seen I tend to agree regards your comments of their proprietary oversight on the platform and folks being at the whim of them as to what works, disappears, appears, and what it costs.

So many options to do video, voice and text... is this the right one to be on? I'm picking many would say yes, but still it gives me pause :)

I've heard good things about Matrix. I have not used it myself yet, but it is a federated network. You can run your own Matrix server and keep it private, if you wish. It may not be on par with Discord when it comes to features, but it is probably the better investment. Open and free technologies are less likely to change on you.

It really depends on what you are looking for.

If you want a small server for hanging around with a small bunch of friends, a local
Mumble server is more than enough. There are some public Jitsi instances that I would
trust more than Discord, if I didn't want to set something myself.

For what I have heard and seen, Discord is trying to build an economy based on bots
and, very likely, trying to pull a "Tuenti" (which would be to gather a whole lot of
users, with not specific business moel in mind, and then sell the whole thing to a
    macro corporation for many megadollar).

I use both Discord and Matrix a lot, and I like them both. Discord is a little more polished and has a few extra fewatures, but Matrix still has a really good feature set. Matrix can also be bridged to just about anything through the use of various bots (with puppet capability). Bridges built with Matrix are pretty transparent.

I'd recommend Matrix, because it has a good feature set, a choice of clients (I use ELement), and is open source.
