I literally cannot tell you married men how jealous I am. Well, maybe I could. But I'd prefer not to...

Let me tell you a story my friend. An eyewitness account of marriage.

Sure, the idea of marriage is wonderful. Love and sex. Sex sex sex. Fuck
all morning. All afternoon. All night. She tells you she loves you and it really "means something". The honeymoon phase. *That* is what you would love
to have. Its what I would love to have too... really.

It just seems the moment she says "yes" to your romantic proposal it all
goes downhill... women turn into total godzilla beastly things over planning
a wedding. They may TELL you they're fine with your idea of a small wedding. BULL SHIT. The wedding must equal that of the fucking royal family especially if she's Italian. You have no say in the wedding. Its her, her family, her relatives, her best friend that she had promised to be a part of everything.

Marriage also means putting up with a wife's in-laws, share a house where
you can no longer fart or scratch yourself or have any privacy until she's
gone for a moment, and generally having someone living with you having a constant opinion about your life. A life that, up until that "I do" moment,
was perfectly fine. Women almost always want to change a man after marriage... are never happy with just a life of a neverending honeymoon. The sex sex sex eventually turns into sex. Then random sex. Then sex a few times a month. Then whenever its convenient to fit into her schedule.

You think you're gonna get away with dressing in a faded Judas Priest shirt
and ripped jeans and spend an afternoon working on a car you're trying hard to restore for the summer, or videogaming, or watching a movie you want to see... forget it. You now do those things based on her schedule... if you watch a movie your lovely wife no longer shuts up and lets you simply enjoy it, she must now begin to talk about non-movie-related things during YOUR movie.

You can no longer enjoy dropping your paycheck on cars, video gamery, hi-fi stereo equipment, computer upgrades or whatever makes you happy. You can't even enjoy a case of beer, a bottle of booze. Your paycheck must now take
into account "her interests". You come home with an expensive toy that you bought with YOUR MONEY and suddenly you're "selfish". But when she blows her dough on herself on whatever, how DARE you criticise her whatsoever.

Not to mention the rediculous overpriced house with a stupid mortgage or two equally rediculous SUV's parked in the driveway with stupid payments or some awful stupid cottage in the Muskokas where you never get to just go and relax, theres *always something* that needs to be worked on.

I'm not booking 2 weeks of precious vacation time from work to go up north... to fix a stupid roof. With a lovely wife suggesting what I'm doing "wrong". Because you know, she's now Mike Holmes the construction expert.

To say nothing about how some married women lose their looks, there is no
more incentive to remain attractive for you, because what for? The marriage
was accomplished... like some sort of mission in a tactical combat unit.

Marriage? PPPPPPPPPPFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT. Happy with casual dating, thank you.

Well, when I was younger I sometimes felt the same way. Now that I am
older, I am usually not jealous of them. It is sometimes even the other
way round and married friends are jealous of me.

Having watched married friends over the years (friends with the couple, not just one member), and realizing that being married now to most of the women
I dated when I was younger probably would not have worked, the jealousy I
had when I was younger went away. There are certain times when it would be nice to have someone but I have also realized there are a lot of times when
I am very, very glad I do not. :)

What boggles me that there is usually not a word of work or investing in. Its always just things go bad. It doesnt work like that.

I have seen my share of divorces - including everyone in my family (minus my brother) and most all of my friends. There are tons of reasons this can happen. Some people change and go in different directions, grow apart. Just like working in a job, there are some things you can deal with and some things you can't. Each person has their own unique list of things that are most important to them.

Maybe one day there will be some magic program algorithm you could use for compatability that would help. Then again, with the potential changing interests as time goes on, that probably won't work either.

One thing to consider, its less, much less of a problem to transition to single to married, than to reverse that decision. You're better of single than marrying the wrong person. Far better off.

^^^ I'll Reddit upvote that comment! You can feel far more alone with the wrong person than actually being alone. Then you have lawyers, divorces, etc.
There is always a risk because I always say that no one gets married to end up getting divorced. It can happen, but I refuse to let a bad experience ruin potential future opportunities in my life. Often times it happens when you least expect it.

Responding to a couple of different peoples' opinions here. I've been reading with interest, and have my own opinions. My perspective is quite different to many here, because for many years, I _couldn't_ get married, even lost one partner to cancer, before marriage was possible. I also have the advantage of not being dictated to gender roles. Yes, same sex marriage does allow us more freedome to define our marriage as we see fit.

First, prior to marriage, the relationships I had were functionally equivalent to marriage - in fact, marriage itself didn't change a lot of the functional aspects of us, but it did provide a measure of legal certainty and visibility not previously afforded. Do I regret marriage? not in the slightest!

    And so on.

Yes, unmarried men, the grass does appear greener on the other side,
but Atreyu's story, is a common experience.

I've had the opposite experience to many - not much time single. That's been good in many ways, but it's given me less time to live with just myself. Even _trying_ to stay single didn't work. The Universe seems to want to keep me in relationships. :)

One thing to consider, its less, much less of a problem to transition
to single to married, than to reverse that decision. You're better of single than marrying the wrong person. Far better off.

I agree with the latter part, but I also don't believe there is the "right" person. Instead, there's multiple possibilities. It's a matter of people who are (1) compatible, (2) who you end up meeting, and (3) that you can work with to build a healthy marriage.

Who is the right person? Not necessarily the one that initially
    appears to be.

As I said, there's no "the tight person", but a number of compatible people. The fact that I have seen one relationship to the end and am now in a happy marriage is testamane to there being more than one possibility.

    I would dress better if I wasn't married because I wouldn't constantly
get "why are you dressing up, were only going to..." comments.

Haha I dress partly for practicality and partly to express who I am - sporty and nerdy. :)

I refuse to let myself fall back into that well of bitterness and sorrow, so

Me neither, I have the same problem, eidetic memory. Its the worst and can really drive a person to madness, almost along the lines of tinitus or misophonia... the irony being my love / admiration for recorded sound.

Ay, maybe you do know! I, too, have always believed that music is the

I know what you're saying. And you're quite correct. I hope you (and Avon)
will forgive me for expressing such negative opinions. It's not always easy to be 'fun'.

    Ay, that's the truth!

Again, I try not to be online when I drink. I know that only evil fills my brain. But it's also hard to tell yourself "NO! \(@_@)/" when you're drunk.

A lesson I am certain to learn the hard way again.

Shut the computer off, put headphones on, gently lower the tone-arm on your favourite vinyl LP and chill out in bed. Put on some stupid TV show while listening to music and see if anything syncs-up. Assuming you have a hi-fi system in your bedroom?

You will notice I'm not one to tell you to stop drinking or drugs. Its your life and I believe you are roughly my age, old enough to not need people

Erm, no. My audio zone is in my living room. And my neighbour tends to cause trouble when I use it. It's not my fault that 12-inch woofers sound better
    than 2-inch headsets!

It took therapy for me to realize how normalized a dysfunctional, emotionally and esteem-killing marriage had become, and it took
fatherhood to realize that the relationship wouldn't let me be the father figure I wanted to be for my son to drive me to move on from my first marriage.

My son turned 18 this summer and I celebrated my 10 year anniversary with my new wife. It all worked out pretty well, I think.

Exactly.. Normal means lots of different things to different people. What is normal is what you are used to and become accustomed to. That doesn't always relate to what should be considered "normal".

Sometimes trying to work things out can become maddening when in reality the best option is to cut ties and move on. Every situation is different.

Even when things are in the toilet, I'm always the one that can find some positive in the situation. That is always how I have lived my life.

I don't look at myself and say I have two failed marrages. I look at it as I have lived multiple lives with multiple people, each had their own time, and I open a new chapter in life with each one. Not how I planed it to be that way, but life doesn't always go as planned and you have to make adjustments and keep moving forward. At least that is my mentality towards it.

BTW, I have been with my "new" wife now for 16 years - which is a good bit longer than both the previous ones.

Mine sounds like a high pitched, sometimes pulsing whine, the kind some old CRT's could make. The odd thing is, if I press on the top of my head, or turn to the side, it usually gets louder, then back to regular volume when I look straight ahead or stop pressing on my head.

If I put pressure under my skull, behind my ears, it gets a tad quieter.

Most nights it's ok, but on some it's as I typed above. A bonus is it's only in one ear, so I start with that ear into

Eustacian tubes. I hade the same problems. Had drainage tubes put in my eardumbs a few times, adenoids removed.. Years later in my 20s the attributed it to allergies. Got an allergy prick test, tried to eliminate as many household allergens as I could. It helped a little.

of you literally cannot understand. And to me, YOU are the gifted ones! (o_O)

The older I get, the more convinced that the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence, it's just.... different. :)

And, just so we're clear here: the only crack (pipe) I would ever put
my mouth on lies between a woman's legs... t(-_-t)

And you triggered one of my "gifts" the ability to virtually experience things in a multisensory manner. And as a gay man with multiple hypersensitivities, especially to a lot of biological things, the (virtual) sensation wasn't pleasant! :D

But I've taught myself to cope (mostly) with my sensitivities, no harm done, no foul. :)

I think it related to my heartbeat. I suspect I have what is known as "Somatic Tinnutus", a version of tinnutus caused by the body, rather than in the ears itself. Can explain why pressure on the ears can cause it to get louder.

Do you find that occasionally, off a sudden, the tinnutus for seemingly no reason gets a LOT louder, then gradually quietens back to its usual volume?

Good for source material, but not for use in my application - too much manual intervention. My system fires up a cron job to play a loooooooong MP3 at a specific time, and kill playback at a suitable time in the morning. There's also logic to get a rough indication of ambient temperature (from an on board sensor) and abort playback if it's too hot (it's not needed under those conditions as I have a fan running then that does the same job), to avoid the risk of overheating the CPU. There's also logic to detect the audio device to use - normally an external USB device, but the on board sound for backup). I can also use the device detection to restart the playback process to blindly attempt restart anytime during the playback period. That has been useful at times.

To be compatible with my system, the audio file needs to be a compatible format (MP3/M4A/FLAC, etc) and at least 11 hours long in playback time - looping a shorter file may create disturbances that interrupt sleep.

Funny you should mention that - I have horrid tinnitus, but when it's quiet I can hear my wife snoring downstairs, or the sound that moving a metal drying rack across the downstairs tile bathroom floor makes, and

Your tinnitus may be a symptom of auditory hypersensitivity. :)

makes the drink. I normally do 1.5 gin, .4 vermouth, splash of olive

I've got 4 devices that can do Bluetooth with reasonable audio quality. But they vary in performance. Two can be a bit glitchy - one is a Bluetooth to FM adapter for the car, the other is a cheap audio system. Then there's the portable Bluetooth speakers which are generally quite good, and the bookshelf hifi system, which I've only used Bluetooth on a couple of occasions - I normally use its internal USB device.
