I ordered an LG 34" ultrawide monitor and a nice 60% mechanical keyboard for my office, seeing as I'm going to end up working out of my home for the forseeable future. It'll be replacing 2 23" monitors and a "chiclet" style wireless keyboard.

With a couple of years-old i7 desktop, my network upgraded to gigabit, a Proxmox server and a Synology NAS replacing a Core 2 Duo desktop with a
bunch of external SATA drives, I'm in good shape for the year. I'm planning
on getting my AWS certification and playing more with Azure.

Now, it's time to segment my network into a homelab network, a network for
IoT devices, and maybe a guest network.

This spring, we're going to enclose an outdoor deck just outside my office
and replace the double barn doors with two french doors we have left over
from a remodel. It'll open up my office space and give us a little more outdoor space.

I recently did this. My wifi mesh system only allows guest networks if it's the router, otherwise you just get one when it's in AP mode. I have my "home" network, a wired "IoT" network (for the various hubs and bridges) and then one for the BBS.

I'd like to get some APs that'll support vlans and multiple SSIDs so I can have a guest network and a wireless IoT network as well. I was looking at some Ubiquiti UniFi APs that would do the job, just not sure if I want to do WiFi Lite or Pro.

I've never played around with UniFi stuff not sure if I can just use the APs on their own or if I need a cloudkey or some other controller.

They work fine on their own. You just need a software controller running somewhere to set them up, but it doesn't need to run full time (I do keep it running as a docker container). I think they call it UniFi Network Application now (used to be called UniFi Access Point Controller).

FWIW, I've just switched over everything to Mikrotik routers.

I looked at Ubiquity stuff, but it was considerably more expensive.

So I started with a mikrotik Hex S (as the main router) and it worked well (I was using ORBI's for the wifi).

Then I invested in a Cap XL ac (for the wifi at the other end of the house) and a RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN - both replaced the ORBI, and the RB4011 took on the role of the main router with the Hex S moved to my server rack, connected via a Fibre cable.

The CAP XL, I havent touched (other than update to the latest firmware) - its all managed by the RB4011. I have 2 SIDS - the home network and the nerd network and can roam around the house no problem at all. (I sold the ORBI's on Ebay).

I'm really happy with the Mikrotik's. You probably need to know what you are doing, since they are not that user friendly - but I can VLAN, Hotspot login (to keep my son at bay), VPN, IPv4/IPv6, firewall, Nat, etc so worthy of a recommendation.

I also bought a small HAP ac2, which I take in the caravan when we go camping. It hooks up to the small NAS I take (with plex for the kids), and we talk to it over 5Ghz, and it talks to the camp grounds WIFI on 2.4 for internet.

I found the EdgeRouter X I have to be pretty user friendly, at least until you wanted to do anything with IPv6.

Anything IPv6 related you have to do from the command line. Everything from getting the prefixes from the ISP to handing those out on which interfaces, along with the firewall rules on each interface.

Some posts on the Ubiquiti forums pointed me in the right direction and after some stumbling blocks everything seems to be working and vlans are still isolated on IPv4 as well as 6.

I'll see if Mikrotik has any stand-alone APs as well.

The NAS is just a two drive QNAP - your right a 5 disk one, fully loaded is just too bulky and heavy.

I dont like QNAP as an OS, would much rather throw FreeNAS on it and run PLEX in a jail (which is what a do at home) - but the QNAP drives the TV when directly connected to HDMI. So I was going to explore with a chrome dongle it the TV, and if that works, the QNAP OS is gone (it's just too slow and bloated, probably take a good 10 mins to boot).

34" is nice, as it's an ultra-wide monitor - it's not too tall. I wear progressive glasses, so a 16:9 34" monitor would be too much vertical. With this monitor, I've gotten rid of a lot of clutter, two older monitors with mis-matching white balances, and am learning how to tile windows to make the most of it instead of running two apps full-screen.

I do now need to find new 2560x1080 wallpapers now. :)
