Hi All,
I just listened to the latest episode of the Darknet Diaries podcast titled @Tennessee. In this episode they dive into the issue of people getting harassed online & in real life to give up their short or unique usernames on various social media platforms.
In this episode they cover the story (among others) of Mark Herring who developed the QWK protocol. Mark had the username @Tennessee on Twitter and was being harassed by a criminal group to give his username to them.
A person from the UK, a member of this group, called 911 pretending to be Mark and falsely stated that he had shot and killed a woman & that he also had pipe bombs. The authorities arrived at Mark's house where they had guns drawn on him. Mark, not knowing what was going on ultimately had a heart attack and died due to the stress of the whole ordeal.
As the host of the podcast put it: "He died because someone was trying to bully him to give up his Twitter account so they could make a few thousand dollars on it."
I'd recommend a listen to this episode. The runtime is 47:39.
