Does anyone remember these when CDs were still popular then?

Briefly. I don't remember them as being the standard for very
long - maybe 3 years max?

But today, it seems strange that the longbox (cardboard) was
considered wasteful and its replacement (shrinkwrapped longbox
    size plastic) was more desirable.

I purchased the majority of my CDs from the mail-in clubs, and
those CDs arrived in the just the standard CD cases.

I don't recall them lasting here long... I vaguely recall noticing them when they arrived, but just amongst regular CD covers and then they were gone again.

"The satirical band Spinal Tap's 1992 studio album Break Like the Wind was sold in an "extra-long box" (an 18 inches (46 cm) longbox)."
