I believe you mean Danish dude. I've dropped all those networks long
ago. I couldn't get responses from him and was getting a lot of crap
shoved down the file networks so gave up.

    Networks I've dropped

    Adventurenet *
    Comatnet (owner shut down network)
    Familynet *
    gatornet *
    justaxnet *
    linuxnet *
    pascalnet *
    rmininet *
    scinet (owner shut down)
    sportnet (owner shut down)
    sysops cechnet *
whisper-echo-net (kept getting my groups dropped, hub kept dying, no or
    slow response from network owner)
    zenet *

Those marked with * are Gert Andersen's dead networks.

dorenet is likely next on the list. My hub quit carrying the network
and it's been hard to try and find a replacement. I should put more
    effort into it.

Which networks have you applied for, maybe I can assist with contacting
    owners.

What is the focus of your system? Some nets are general in nature, and
some cater to a topic. When Avon (Paul) created FSXNet it wasn't his idea
to become as big as it has, and it was to experiment with FTN networking.

Now FSXNet would be the second most active network, and is still

I'm setting up my bbs, I've applied to 5 nets but only received two responses. I'm wondering if most of them are just on auto until the pc goes up in smoke and that's that.

When I was a kid, I remember calling into a BBS that basically had nothing new on it, over time, and then talking with others, imagining some scenario where someone had stashed the computer away in a closet, and it'd keep running until the computer failed.

I think that's probably _way_ more common, now. As it was, I think the sysop really _did_ show up from time to time, just not in local message bases.

    Hi paulie420,

Who is supposedly running the network, and how does one contact
    them?

I *believe* Necromancer from Necrominom BBS. And IIRC, he was
*recently* mentioning wanting to get more active will all his FTNs.

It was back two/three months ago, but yes that was the system I used via
a menu without having to log into the bbs.

    Hi Michael,

What is the focus of your system? Some nets are general in
    nature, and

Really just focusing on message nets at the moment. I've got to learn
to customize the bbs. I might try to add a game or two but, I'd just
like to keep nets going at this stage :)

One you've added one, adding more is just the same process. What I mean
with "what's the focus" of you system is, that my bbs caters for the
Amiga and has 98% amiga releated content.

That seems pretty neat, honestly. Occasionally I've wanted to pre-pay for some service so that things could stay up for some long-ish period of time.

But doesn't really work, in the end, since things need maintenance. Better plan tends to be to have something that's easy to turn over, and easy to duplicate.

E.g., when I scanned my grandmother's cookbooks, I immediately got the scans out to various people. It was kind of interesting, too, when someone asked about a recipe for something they remembered, and I tracked it down.

But if I were to make a website for such content, I'm not at all sure it'd survive me, beyond whatever made its way into the Internet Archive.

I think what instantly makes a BBS look unique is it's UI/visual flow.
That doesn't need to involve top notch ANSI artistry always.

But it is always easier to me to come back to boards that have unique visual feats and then recheck content constantly (even if there is none) than those that come with 1000 games, TBs of data and all FTNs plugged in.

These two combined may perhaps create a perfect match, but I think creating interesting UX is something more important to attract regular consumers to reconnect. At least this is what turns me on to come back to my favorite places.

I agree; one of my fav bbSes, HyperNode [currently defunct/working on something new] had a neat way of 'starting' their bbS:

deleting all stock Mystic menus and starting from zero. *ALL* menus; this prolly isn't something most ppl should or can do - but it sure made for a Mystic bbS that was like no other. He had awesome animations, local teleconference - but that was accessed thru a specialty menu w/ local meetup times/etc, message areas that weren't access w/ "J"oin Conference or "A"reas - and so much m0re...

Its 'up' right now - but he's deleted everything again... until his next adventure.

I like both. sbbs def has more to it. Mystic is simplier. I like seeing different boards, and people running other stuff.

I am not a huge fan of JS, but it is pretty nice. DM has written some great stuff in JS server-wise. I am amazed at what it can do.

Freepascal is my choice though, so Mystic is awesome! I like Enigma as well.

CyberBBS is my favorite, though :)

Mystic is my choice as well, but more because it w0rks more like the Telegard/Renegade bbSes that I started out running...

The fact that Mystic has MPL (and Python 2/3) that is so close to FreePascal is a nice addition and lets me do a lot m0re than I could in the early 9os.
