• Hello

From Starstorm@21:1/101 to All on Sat Feb 13 18:34:14 2021
It's been a long time. To anyone who remembers me, I'm sorry I ran off and
shut my BBS down without any notice. All I can say is life happened. A lot happened rather quickly and much of it was unexpected. Hard to explain but
the part that I will tell, is I fell and broke my left ankle, and recovery didn't go well. I ended up with a blood clot the entire length of my leg. That's not the only thing, but that alone was hard to deal with, and it took
me quite a few months before I could even walk with a cane.

I might have a BBS again, but right now I'm working on other things, like an Asterisk server. I do miss it, that's for sure.

Hey there :) Welcome back, nice to see you in the message bases again. Sorry
to hear things have not been so great but it sounds like you're on the mend
and it's nice that you have some time for BBSing :)

We're in summer over here and I have spent too much time outside in the sun doing working around the section today. Just come inside to have a rest and catch up on echomail.

I've been watching Wandavision on Disney+ and enjoying it... the plot is getting twisty now.

    Best, Paul

Indeed. I guess, one thing kind of lead to another, I started messing with my Rasperry Pis again, then I realized I wanted to mess with Asterisk again, and
I guess some how that lead me to thinking about BBSes again. Not sure how
    that happened, but whatever.

I do need to find some time to study for my amateur radio Extra class
upgrade. I finally upgraded to General last year, in a parking lot at a park. They had so many people who wanted to test and no schools are libraries were open so they did it at a public park.

This week, my family business was sold, and of course the new owners
didn't get me set up for payroll until after what would have been my first paycheck. Ugh. At least they want me to stay, I have to look on the bright side.

Hah, that's right, in your part of the world it is summer. Here of course
it's winter, but being in Florida it hasn't been very cold, a few days here
and there have been maybe in the 40's (fahrenheit of course) but I do own a jacket or 2.

I've been watching Wandavision on Disney+ and enjoying it... the plot is getting twisty now.

I do plan to watch it, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I did recently watch Supernatural all the way through. That took a while, but it was worth
    it.

This is the slippery slope I know all to well :)

Congrats on the gradings you have achieved. I have a general license here in New Zealand but to be honest have not used it much in recent years. I tend to get really focused on one thing at a time and at this stage it's still computing / BBS and general communications stuff... but with that online
    focus.

I'd like to spend more time on my LPFM station but at the moment am building
up a new HUB system for the FTN networks I'm active in and am learning new stuff as I go.

This week, my family business was sold, and of course the new owners didn't get me set up for payroll until after what would have been my
first paycheck. Ugh. At least they want me to stay, I have to look on
    the bright side.

If you're happy to stay then that's all good. My dad had a third generation family business he ended up shuttering in the mid 90s after it began to
become less and less profitable. I used to work there as a high school kid in the holidays. I miss the atmosphere etc. of the place and memories of
working there ... sadly even the old building has been torn down now :(

I needed to check what 40F = in C and it's (ding!) 4 ... so yep that's cold. That's really like our cooler winter lows here... down my way in winter it would be 2-4C overnight and up to 8-12C during the day.

Right now we've had temps in the lower to mid 20s so that would be around 66-77F in your temps.

I fell down an Asterisk rabbit hole once. Ended up with 8 IP phones around the house for no particular reason other than that I could.

It was fun "paging" the entire house at times, I set it to play the Star Trek Boatswain's whistle first. I also had way too many DID numbers, I set one to ring only in my office, I had a toll free number (because why not?) and also another DID that is local to my parents house along with our regular home phone number.

A lot of that I dismantled, and now run just one ATA for the "landline" which pretty much only our alarm system uses. I still have the DID local to my parents and one that I'd like to setup as a dial-up number to my BBS.

I woke up to ~15cm of snow that fell overnight, it looks like we're in for 5-10cm more today. It was -9c when I woke up with a "feels like" of -13c which isn't as bad as it has been lately.

I like to shovel the driveway & sidewalk as early as possible, as once people start walking all over it it makes it harder to shovel, so that's what I did shortly after waking up (even before my morning cuppa).

The neighbour was already out shovelling, so we chatted for a brief moment before getting back to it.

Right now we've had temps in the lower to mid 20s so that would be around 66-77F in your temps.

We'll be back around those temperatures in 2 or 3 months. :)

I have Comcast service with unlimited voice. We're not using the home phone lines, instead have a DECT phone with extension units in the house. Running the line into a Pi and using Asterisk might be a fun project. Not sure how

port adapter. Maybe SIP might be easier?

I don't think using USB is much fun with Asterisk and the Pi. I'm not sure if there is any USB FXS/FXO device with good Linux and Asterisk support. Maybe Astribank, but it doesn't look cheap...

It's much easier to use a SIP device with Asterisk. Or a PC with some supported PCI(e) card from ebay.

I did something similar. When we bought this house our cable provider gave us a free year of internet, TV & home phone. I had no use for the phone line so I just plugged the alarm system into it & forgot all about it.

Once I fell down that rabbit hole I got a Linksys SPA3102 that has 1x FSX & 1x FXO port. I then set Asterisk up so that if I dialed normally it would go out our normal SIP provider (voip.ms), but if I dialed 9 first it would go out that phone line from the cable provider.

I next set it up so that if someone called number from the cable provider it would play an automated recording: "This line is equipped for outgoing calls only".

The SPA3102 was easy enough to set up, in the end Asterisk just saw it as another SIP trunk, though this is something else I've retired. (After the free year, there was no point in paying for it).

My Mom called once while I was in the middle of setting up an entirely unnecessary automated prompt: "Press 1 for Jay's office, press 2 for the living room, press 3 for the kitchen..." - That was fun explaining that to her. :)

    Chuckle... I did too :)

I used the phone system the most as a baby monitor, when my kids were newly born!

I did have a USA number which I had a few calls on (because I work globally and did a lot with the US).

Now, the phones are in their original boxes, I'll probably sell them on ebay, if I can get anything for them :(

With the cost of mobile phones services being so low (including unlimited calling nationally atleast), and the fact that everybody has one connected to their hip, its kinda pointless.

Yup, ditto, mine are in a box in the basement. It was neat to setup and play with, but I don't really talk on the phone much at all, and if I do it's on my cell.

Exactly this. Kicking back on the couch with my airpods in is a hell of a lot more comfortable on a work call. Sitting at a desk holding a receiver to my head seems archaic in the covid era.

Never ever had to do such things but interesting to read about them.

Here I spent some of the day moving a sprinkler around our back yard to get plants watered... later my wife was not happy with our old sprinker and we
went to a local hardware store to get a new one.

As I type it's throwing out a ton of water towards the front of the house and every so often the water oscillations are throwing the water at my window. :)

Yeah, I've got unlimited national calls and text. Using VoIP within Australia is less attractive these days. Internationally, there's still a point. But some of my likely contacts are already covered via Hamshack Hotline, which is a VoIP service for hams, I can call them for free. And on my end, I'm using the same DECT phone as I do for regular "landline"service.

The MP112 looks a bit out of my price-point for my project.

Could it be possible to build a "public payphone" thingy with
    one of these instead?

If I can plug an analog phone into it, that would be cool. But
wouldn't I would still need to subscribe to a SIP service to

The more I think about it, MagicJack at $40/yr provides the

    don't say thank you.

This would be pretty easy if you have the payphone. You just need to be sure to get the docs so you can flip the dip switches on the board inside to setup how you want. Don't get an old Bell payphone, they have propritary bullshit that make them impossible to program without a lot of effort.

Heck.. the air-pumps at most gas-stations are pay-only now. They
used to be a courtesy thing. The minimum for a 4 minute session
    is $2.

In California tire air must be free. Many gas stations have coin-op air pumps but if you go inside and ask they will push a button to turn it on for free... or give you coins. Costco has fancy new auto-measuring nitogen fill air pumps. You just set the pressure and it does everything automatically. Its brilliant.

but you can configure every little detail. We haven't tested it with
a payphone yet, but will do soon.

The MP112 looks a bit out of my price-point for my project.

They are offered for 10€ to 25€ on ebay (Germany).

Could it be possible to build a "public payphone" thingy with
    one of these instead?

If I can plug an analog phone into it, that would be cool. But
wouldn't I would still need to subscribe to a SIP service to
    accomodate that.

The more I think about it, MagicJack at $40/yr provides the
device and the service in one package.

It depends on the kind of payphone you're using. The phones the MP112 was bought for rely on receiving an 16khz metering tone/pulse. I don't think MagicJack or the Grandstream HT802 do support it. Might be fine for your setup though.

Well, I don't really need to create a "real" payphone booth.
Even one with a fake facade and just enough similarily to
resemble a phone booth would be enough. Even if I could dress up
the handset with a book around it would be funny to see - since

With the cost of mobile phones services being so low (including
unlimited calling nationally atleast), and the fact that everybody has
one connected to their hip, its kinda pointless.

I love living on the California coast. I have an ocean view, and at best 1
bar from AT&T and Verizon. I've relied on wi-fi calling for the most part
with my cell phone carrier, but running SIP into my house might be just the tech project I need.

I never understood that, it seemed like when gas prices skyrocketed,
squeegees fell into disrepair, the windshield cleaning solution got more
water than solution, and places charged for air and water. I suppose upkeep
    of the compressors is expensive.

They're required to provide it air and water for free if you purchase gas,
but you're still running around trying to fill all of your tires quickly -
or having to go ask for more time. Annoying.

My car doesn't have a spare tire, so I bought a can of Fix-A-Flat, a tire patch kit and a little 12v air compressor with a gauge, and I love it. I
know the gauge is reliable, I don't have to hurry, and I can fill up bicycle tires without having to throw them in the car and drive them to the gas station. It's already paid for itself with 2 flats I've fixed on my own.

One machine in my town accepts, quarters, $1 and $2 coins, and

My car doesn't have a spare tire, so I bought a can of Fix-
A-Flat, a tire patch kit and a little 12v air compressor

I bought one those 12v air compressor emergency pumps when a 2nd
car I had had three particular tires that were too deflated to
drive safely. I managed to fill up two tires reasonably well,
but when I went to do the next tire, the motor burned out!
Piece of junk. I took it back for a refund. The manual
stipulated a duty-cycle. I honored it. I took my time with more
than the recommended cool-down time for the pump, but it still
    burned out.

I felt the same way when I got the emergency pump - I could take
my time to fill and measure and fill and measure and fill and
measure. But I never bothered with getting another pump like
that. I just try to keep an eye on the tires.. and as soon as
they look unusually low, I wait for nice weather to plan my next
visit to one of the "pay" pumps.

I measure the pressure *before* I go to the pumps. If a tire
needs air, I keep the little cap off and store it in a pocket.
Then, when I arrive at the pay pump, I am not wasting time
unscrewing the cap from the next tire. I can just dart from one
tire to the next and maximize the air time.

That's a shame; I've had a SLIME branded pump since 2014, and it's held up, although I think the duty cycle they recommend is 10 minutes on/10 off. I've only come close to that once, filling up a SUV tire from scratch. My little Prius tires don't stress it, I suppose.

I'm down to operating just one vehicle now. It's a RAV4 and the

I discovered a 2" nail in one of its tires many years ago when I
was pulling out of a parking lot. I wondered what the click
click sound consistent with the speed of my vehicle was all
    about.

The tire was losing a bit of air each day when the source of the
problem went unnoticed. But one day when the vehicle was at
rest, I could see the flat head of the guilty party resting
flush with the surface of the tire.

I prided myself in pinpointing the sound on the specific tire/
    wheel that was suspect.

No need to apologize! Things happen -- that's for sure...

Yeah, I know, still kind of felt bad about it. I'm sure I had network packets and stuff piling up and people wondering what happened to me. I did have a
    few folks email me though.

    Sounds like a nice project!

I've been thinking of learning more about Asterisk for a long time, but have never really gotten to it. One day... :)

Indeed. Around the time I shut down my BBS I also shut down a FreePBX server
I had at the time. Which of course is Asterisk with a web interface. This
time I wanted to try going with vanilla Asterisk. I did have some help. Back then I was part of a sort of network of Asterisk servers called C*NET. C*NET
is a network made up of mostly Asterisk servers run by phone and phone
hardware collectors and they have done neat things with it. It's been around
a long time and a lot of the numbers in the directory are dead. They never
got around to doing any verification to see who was still online. Which has been good for me, because I've come and gone from it a few times. I always
make sure to take my numbers out of the directory though if it goes down for
    an extended period of time.

This time around, there's a newer one that to me is better. It's called
NPSTN. They've helped me with my questions getting set up and I've been able
to get both to work on the same Asterisk server.

C*NET is at ckts.info (ckts, I think is meant to be an abbreviation of circuits)
NPSTN is at npstn.us. Both have email lists on groups.io.

Congrats on the gradings you have achieved. I have a general license
here in New Zealand but to be honest have not used it much in recent years. I tend to get really focused on one thing at a time and at this stage it's still computing / BBS and general communications stuff... but with that online focus.

Thanks. Admittedly I'm not too active myself, I like to listen and mess with the technology though. I have a DRM Hotspot and an Allstar node. Both are Raspberry Pi's and the Allstar node IS Asterisk modified for radio, so you
see why I started thinking more about Asterisk. LOL

I'd like to spend more time on my LPFM station but at the moment am building up a new HUB system for the FTN networks I'm active in and am learning new stuff as I go.

LPFM that took me a second to remember what that is. Maybe my brain is just a little fried for working on Asterisk for 2 weekends and on and off for the
last week. Except for backups I've stopped for now. It works, and nothing is broken so I'll leave it for a while. I have some other ideas though.

If you're happy to stay then that's all good. My dad had a third generation family business he ended up shuttering in the mid 90s after
it began to become less and less profitable. I used to work there as a high school kid in the holidays. I miss the atmosphere etc. of the place and memories of working there ... sadly even the old building has been torn down now :(

For now it's fine, my mom is still there for now, our office manager is still there and we get along. The new boss seems nice and so far I like the
benefits. I have a fallback plan across the parking lot. My brother said he'd find a place for me in his office. The company that sold was my mom's Real Estate company. My brother is an attorney and he took the years of following mom around and his law degree and opened a Title Company. Technically
speaking I own his company too.

Oh dang, I hate to see things get torn down. We had a big mall-like place that's been downtown for many years that got torn down. It was like a mall on the river called The Jacksonville Landing. People visiting from out of town always wanted to visit the place. It had gone really downhill though. In fact there was a shooting at a Maden gaming tournament there a few years ago. I
had friends who were going to even be there, but just never made it. I'm glad they didn't.

I like it when it's not too hot and not too cold, 75-77 are nice. Though we also have the humidity, which makes the heat feel hotter.

Haven't seen that... but may look for it :)

Supernatural was one of those shows that was on for so dang long, but I
didn't catch it early enough that I always felt like I'd just watch it when
it was over. So that's what I did. It took a while even binge watching it,
but to me it was worth it.

I fell down an Asterisk rabbit hole once. Ended up with 8 IP phones around the house for no particular reason other than that I could.

Back when I shut the BBS down, I had an Asterisk server, I had a couple of OBIHAI devices, one took my cable provider phone that I rarely used and
turned that VoIP line into a line I could use with Asterisk, then I had a couple of phones on an ATA across the room with wires everywhere. One of the phones I had on the ATA was a Tyco Superblocks phone, the other was a
cordless phone. The ATA also had Bluetooth, so when I was home I could answer calls on all my lines even my iPhone, from the other phones. I think I want
to dig that hardware back out. The problem is when I was recovering from my roommate and my mom stuck everything in bins, because there was painting and carpet being replaced. I still haven't been able to find half of it.

I still have the DID
local to my parents and one that I'd like to setup as a dial-up number
    to my BBS.

Cool. The folks from NPSTN which have been helping me with Asterisk actually have instructions on their site how to set
up Asterisk to use it as a Softmodem.

See, this is where some of my ideas are sparked. If you see my other replies, maybe it's more clear the trail that got me from Raspberry Pi's back to
    BBSes. LOL

Funny. I'm watching a Twitch streamer right now who "scambaits" scammers waisting their time, and I can hear Allison the default Asterisk voice on the phone number he just called. If anyone is curious. He goes by the name
Kitboga. He uses Asterisk with a buch of numbers to call the scammers live.

The problem with a lot of these small compressors, is just what kind of duty cycle they can maintain. You found out the hard way :/ But If you've got fairly flat tyres, I'd be inclined to give it a break between each tyre to let it cool off.

In my misbegotten youth I did some work at a nursery. They had a tandem trailer with truck tyres on it. Anyhoo, it had inflation issues, and one day it came to a head, flat in the morning, so the owner went and picked up a compressor, no idea what brand now it was to long ago. It eventually achieved zero inflation before starting to smoke. To much volume, to long a continuous run, and to much weight on it.

flat, use it for one tire, and never use it again. And when it
*does* burn out during the 2nd use, you're supposed to think "oh
    well.. I purchased it 5 years ago, so $XX / 5 = $not-too-bad for
the peace of mind per year, and then you buy another one. :/

    Hello Starstorm!

On 16 Feb 2021, Starstorm said the following...
C*NET is at ckts.info (ckts, I think is meant to be an abbreviation of circuits)
NPSTN is at npstn.us. Both have email lists on groups.io.

    That's cool! =)

    Thanks for the links!

Yep, even have a few things that slapped me in the face 2 years ago that have come back to haunt me this year. Next month might get rough

    Good luck!

    Thanks. I'm gonna need it.

    See how you go. :)
Thanks, you're right, I could just remain a user. There are some thin I would like to do though, if I can find the time. We'll see.

    See how you go. :)

Indeed, for now I will mess with Asterisk and be a user. There's more stuff I want to do first.

This is my first post from Ground Control. I'm watching the Mystic Guy
    videos. :-)

Sorry, just being silly, but If I followed it right this should go out.

So, yeah. I have a BBS again. I was wrong when I said Spring has sprung. I
must have jixed it, the day after it was cold again.

I also realized, I really did want to step away from Asterisk and work on something else, this time I'm running Mystic on Linux, instead of Synchronet
on Windows. I also picked a different name, in case I decide to put the other BBS back up some day. Before I shut everything down I was thinking of putting up a Mystic BBS with this name anyway.

My inspiration, well remember the other BBS was Satellite of Madness. That
name was inspired by MST3K and the Sattelite of Love. Well then I thought,
what would I name a second BBS, along the same lines. Then the words, "Ground Control to Major Tom" popped into my head, and the rest was history. Then of course, I had my fall, and all my plans also fell apart.

    Hi Angel,

Welcome to fsxNet and nice to have you as a member of our small online community. I hope things in Spain are going OK for you and yours.

Here in New Zealand we are in the middle of summer. I have just come back from a 35 min drive to a beach where my wife and daughter and I did some exploring along the coast on foot. We found a cave that you could walk through at low tide and it came out onto another bit of the coastal foreshore. It was all rather nice :)

The place was called 'Doctors Point'

I do plan to watch it, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I did recently watch Supernatural all the way through. That took a while, but

I did have a USA number which I had a few calls on (because I work globally and did a lot with the US).

This would be pretty easy if you have the payphone. You just need to be sure to get the docs so you can flip the dip switches on the board inside to setup how you want. Don't get an old Bell payphone, they have propritary bullshit that make them impossible to program without a lot of effort.

Even if I could dress up
the handset with a book around it would be funny to see - since
my shop is a bookshop. The coin slot could just activate a relay
to enable a hard connection for the handset - or it could just
be fake thing for the coins, and I could activate "power" via
    remote or something.

A week ago I was planning to jump off a cliff, and now I'm
dreaming of building a phone booth. :/ Somethin wrong with me.

I never understood that, it seemed like when gas prices skyrocketed,
squeegees fell into disrepair, the windshield cleaning solution got more
water than solution, and places charged for air and water. I suppose upkeep
    of the compressors is expensive.

than the recommended cool-down time for the pump, but it still
    burned out.

I know the gauge is reliable, I don't have to hurry, and I
can fill up bicycle tires without having to throw them in
the car and drive them to the gas station. It's already
paid for itself with 2 flats I've fixed on my own.

I can just dart from one
tire to the next and maximize the air time.

but when I went to do the next tire, the motor burned out!

That's a shame; I've had a SLIME branded pump since 2014, and it's held up, although I think the duty cycle they recommend is 10 minutes on/10 off. I've only come close to that once, filling up a SUV tire from scratch. My little Prius tires don't stress it, I suppose.

My pump was a Coleman. I think it was a more robust model at

I'm down to operating just one vehicle now. It's a RAV4 and the
tires are a bit above average size. ;)

I discovered a 2" nail in one of its tires many years ago when I

    about.

The tire was losing a bit of air each day when the source of the
problem went unnoticed. But one day when the vehicle was at
rest, I could see the flat head of the guilty party resting
flush with the surface of the tire.

I prided myself in pinpointing the sound on the specific tire/

So, yeah. I have a BBS again. I was wrong when I said Spring has sprung. I

Seems like a bit of a slow day today..

I've been working on my second bbs, I've done all the art except the

Feel free to look around: gcat.happylandbbs.com 11823 (TELNET) and 11822

If it's not up, try later, might be a thunderstorm or something.

I've been thinking about asking for a second fsx node number, and getting newsgroups on here, but not sure, are there any good ones?

Last time I looked at usenet it was mostly either spam in the general
echos or the same bbs advertisements in the bbs echos.

Also thinking it might be good to try the interbbs games, just to see how
    binki fares with that.

Any chance these three could be made available via the fsxNet Usenet Gateway, please & thanks?

Seems like a bit of a slow day today..

it's been busy here :( well I should be happy but my head is a tad fried.

I've been working on my second bbs, I've done all the art except the offline mail menu, but I think it's ready.

I wish I had your ANSI fu :)

Feel free to look around: gcat.happylandbbs.com 11823 (TELNET) and 11822 (SSH)

Will do this soon... stand by caller.

If it's not up, try later, might be a thunderstorm or something.

    Ah, or is it BOOM

I've been thinking about asking for a second fsx node number, and getting newsgroups on here, but not sure, are there any good ones?

You can if you want, re Usenet, it's mixed. some interesting activity and other full of spam.

Last time I looked at usenet it was mostly either spam in the general echos or the same bbs advertisements in the bbs echos.

    There is that for sure..

Also thinking it might be good to try the interbbs games, just to see how binki fares with that.

    which ones?

    How fatherhood treating you?

Good thanks, my son is 3 now and just been diagnosed with autism level 3 which I suppose is a good thing (means support) though who knows what this thriving kids program is going to be like.

Oh, good news on the support front. Probably good news to have an understanding of who he is? A good friend of mine (now that I think about it havent seen her in a while), did her PhD thesis based on autistic children and pretty much has worked her whole working career in the field (she's probably mid 30s).

Sadly, something I dont know much about - but hope the support helps.

Hows things with you? still playing with videotex?

Yes and no. I've not worked on videotex recently, but its still in the back of my mind to build out more. (Same to for clrghouz.) I'd be inspired by other users who have the same interest - and I occassionaly find a group who are, but then they go AWOL...

I started maintaing an OSS project 20+ years ago, and have neglected it for the past 15 years or so (married, kids, work, etc), so I've spent the last 6 months updating it - especially since web software approaches have changed a lot over that time.

Now that I've done that, I'm probably going to work a bit more on clrghouz. There are a few things that are bugging me that I want to enhance (my binkd implementation for one), so I'll probably chip away at that for a bit.

Have you been doing any programming recently?

I think so, we're seeing a speech therapist and an OT, we've been on NDIS which covers all that, we couldn't afford it without it, so yeah support definitley helps :)

Yeah, it can be very hard to maintain interest in something when no one else is interested that you can share it with.

I started maintaing an OSS project 20+ years ago, and have neglected it for the past 15 years or so (married, kids, work, etc), so I've spent the last 6 months updating it - especially since web software approaches have changed a lot over that time.

    Cool!

Have you been doing any programming recently?

Yes sort of, a lot of scripting in second life. Not much else, a couple of times i've come close to chipping away at my OS.. but haven't done a lot with that either lately.

Whoops i forgot synchronet ctrl-z saves and quits, not bring up the menu to quote.

That's not Synchronet as a whole. It depends on what message editor you're using.

Yes, I think I compiled it for mac before - but probably didn't make it available.

Yeah, he's 3 now :) Not really done anything with BBS projects, kind of tired of it all really - at least the public projects thing. I missed some of the people here.

I got envy up and running again, but not in a public repo, and possibly not what i had before - as i nuked my github account without saving anything (just got older backups.)

Anyway, hope you're doing well, 20 for beers still going strong? :)

Yeah, I think he's referring to fseditor.js. The built-in (line) editor in Synchronet doesn't save and exit on Ctrl-Z.
