Exactly. Did anyone really lose or gain anything from the vote regardless if it was up or down?

In reality it doesn't do much. Votes here are mostly a way of saying "I saw and liked/disliked your message" without having to write out a reply.

If the voting feature was more widely-used, then we could use votes for sorting, showing, hiding messages, but there just isn't enough uptake to make that worthwhile at the moment.

Over time the vote feature on reddit has been abused to hide comments that arent part of that communities view point. not hostile posts, just ones that people 'don't like'. When you dont have the regular guys, there's people running multiple year old bots that can really 'take out' someone they don't like with downvotes and reporting.

at first the reddit voting system worked, but like anything it got taken over and perverted.

back to bbses, i feel this voting thing was interesting in concept, but when implimented it just didn't pan out. bbs people dont want to vote or upvote or downvote posts.

Stop upvoting EVERY SINGLE ONE of your OWN POSTS.

Does this have any practical affect?

It just seems a little tacky/odd to upvote one's own messages. If I see that a message has been upvoted or downvoted, it's at least a sign that the message was liked or disliked. I might be curious who upvoted/downvoted it, and when I see that someone has upvoted their own message, it just seems odd. It's like someone patting themsef on the back, proud of what they've posted. But otherwise it does no harm..

And voting could work here - as well or as poorly as on reddit - if there was uptake, which there hasn't been. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing.

IMHO the reality of BBSs today makes the feature unnecessary, but it's still worth having in case somebody wants to use it.

On other platforms I scroll past most content without 'liking' or upvoting it. It's not that it's a lot of extra effort, but I can't be bothered. I'm sure I'm not alone in this, and we have a much smaller pool of potential voters here, so there are very few votes.

Ideally it'd be opt-in and user-configurable. I wouldn't want to hide content by default, and I don't think I'd use the feature myself. It's all hypothetical since we don't and won't have the necessary volume of votes to work with. Lots of potential problems, too (eg. that time when The Millionaire received tens of thousands of downvotes).

Upvoting and downvoting in Synchronet has only been around for a few years. I haven't seen it used much, but I've seen it occasionally. So I wouldn't say nobody wants to vote.

I think the poll feature is cool. Even if it's not used very often, I've seen it used occasionally and I think it can be useful sometimes. In the 90s, I had seen at least one 'voting booth' door, and with Synchronet's poll feature, that kind of thing is now built into Synchronet.

Didn't know about that one. 'Replies' is a pretty good metric for at least showing the 'popularity' of a message (maybe not so much whether people liked it or disliked it).

Don't get me wrong, I like the voting feature. It's fun to work with and think about, and has its uses. I just doubt if votes alone will ever become useful for ranking/filtering messages here.

people read them, I upvote because I think I had something great to express myself with.

If that's your reason for doing it, you can stop.

When reading a message, the reader tells you how many upvotes &
downvotes the message has. In my message reader, I had added a sysop
command to view the tally information (included who voted on it).
Normally it shows The Millionaire's messages have an upvote, and the
tally information shows The Millionaire voted on it.

thats too bad. maybe votes should be anonymous

    Why is it "too bad"?

    Nightfox

because someone can spy on it and see who voted.

I continually see The Millionaire upvote his own messages on Dove-net. I some
w doubt he has been doing that to troll everyone here the whole time.

He may be falsely assuming that it causes his messages to be more likely to be read, as it would on a social media platform.

but he's right. he's getting the attention he wants.

the simple fact that you posted should convey that... no need to upvote your own post... this isn't facebook or reddit, ya know...

Aside, I was musing the other day -- would it be possible to launch Linux doors/xtrn programs from Win32 SBBS using WSL2 on the same machine? I'm
not sure how the output would be piped to the user, but since Win now has
the ability to directly launch a linux kernal... that would be pretty
slick. I'm sure this is a naive assumption, tho :)
Assuming it's in /mnt/c/sbbs/xtrn/doorname or similar...

You should be able to use the wsl command to launch a stdio linux door,
I don't think SynchroNet itself will know/care that it's "linux" or not.

When you launch wsl, the working directory should be your directory in
the shell... That said, you may be better off with the door code/files themselves inside WSL, as the boundary connection is less than stellar
for file locking from multiple processes. You can still reference the appropriate node directory via /mnt/c/sbbs/NODE# as needed.
