    Upgrade: A Novel | Paperback
    Blake Crouch
Random House Publishing Group | Ballantine Books
    Fiction / Thrillers - Technological / Thrillers - Suspense / Science Fiction - Action & Adventure
    Published Jun 27, 2023

"The mind-blowing new thriller from the New York Times
bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion-currently in
development as a motion picture at Steven Spielberg's Amblin
    Partners

"You are the next step in human evolution."

"At first, Logan Ramsay isn't sure if anything's different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep.

"But before long, he can't deny it: Something's happening to his brain. To his body. He's starting to see the world, and those around him-even those he loves most-in whole new ways.

"The truth is, Logan's genome has been hacked. And there's a reason he's been targeted for this upgrade. A reason that goes back decades to the darkest part of his past, and a horrific family legacy.

"Worse still, what's happening to him is just the first step in a much larger plan, one that will inflict the same changes on humanity at large-at a terrifying cost.

"Because of his new abilities, Logan's the one person in the world capable of stopping what's been set in motion. But to have a chance at winning this war, he'll have to become something other than himself. Maybe even something other than human.

"And even as he's fighting, he can't help wondering: what if humanity's only hope for a future really does lie in engineering our own evolution?

"Intimate in scale yet epic in scope, Upgrade is an intricately plotted, lightning-fast tale that charts one man's thrilling transformation, even as it asks us to ponder the limits of our humanity-and our boundless potential.

Interesting. Blake Crouch wrote a couple of other books, and the Wayward
Pines trilogy that was the basis for the 2015 TV series that I loved.
Reviews from Andy Weir. Thanks for the recommendation!

Does this book have any relation to any of the movies like this? There was a movie called "Upgrade", but it wasn't quite exactly the same plot. Coincidentaly enough, it stars someone named Logan :D. There were some other movies, though, along the same lines.

No, because people logging into bbses hate WORDS.

I have the opposite problem -- low-cost and free ebooks have given me a
backlog of books to sort through. I use Calibre to make ebooks from most
any format, then email them to my Kindle account or read them in
    Calibre.

As much as I love paper books and book culture (my first job was in a bookstore...) being able to read with adjustable fonts and a backlight
at my age is better. Reading a used SF paperback like the early edition
of Dune that I found, with yellowing paper and faded ink is a chore.

There is plenty of material out there, that is for sure. The
Gutenburg Project is pretty good. I used Gutenberg to pull a
copy of Roughing It In The Woods - Suzanne Moodie. I wanted to
source all references to blackflies and deerflies to learn how
they coped with those bloodsuckers back in the day. Very handy
to do that search in ebook format or txt.

I don't need glasses (and I am the only person amongst 14 first
cousins (some older than me and some younger) and aunts and
uncles, and 2nd cousins much younger than me, that doesn't need
    glasses.

I recall no issues with pocketbook format copies of The
Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged - by Ayn Rand - in my teens,
but the yellowing/fading of the paper would make it a challenge
today. So far, I don't need larger fonts for anything except
that reading the Ingredients list on drug store products is
impossible most of the time. I carry a credit card sized
    magnifier for that.

In college, I had the odd professor or two who'd write their own
textbook. Mostly, they were poorly printed and spiral bound, but every
once in a while you'd see a hardbound edition.

Invariably, they'd change a word or two, increment the edition number
and require the newer edition for their class.

I took a trip a few months back and visited the campus bookstore where I worked. The actual BOOK portion of the store had shrunk greatly, to be
taken up by sundries and a mini grocery store for the new dorms that had kitchenettes. It makes sense, seeing that you can buy most texts online
now - and Amazon has a rental program for textbooks. Before you could
sell your texts back, but you never knew how much you'd get. This way,
    the costs are up-front.

They all freakin' do this! They think they're so smart. I personally held off on buying any books at all until I was absolutely sure it was absolutely necessary. Sometimes even when it _was_ necessary, I'd just photocopy from another student in class.

I'm pretty sure Amazon had kindle editions of some of the texts. I'd

You just can't browse an ebook as fast as you browse a thick book.

When I was at college, a lot of people had digital books. The gal who used to sit right next to me had a very nice ereader their parents had given her as a birthday gift for college. She tried it for a while and went back to paper books in a matter of weeks.

I know you have search functions and bookmark functions with ebooks, but it is still easier to locate information on a paper tome, specially if you mark the pages you often reference.

I have noticed this effect with RPG books too. When your reference manual is inpaper, you tend to locate information faster at the game table. My friends are
all cheap fucks and tend to come with pirated digital copies. They take ages tofind rules and reference tables on their mobiles and tablets.

That reminds me of when I was in college, and when buying my textbooks, I'd try to buy used copies if available since they were cheaper than new copies. For one class, I ended up with a used copy where the previous owner had highlighted whole pages of the book (I didn't really get why they did that). One day in class, we were working in groups and had our books open, and someone else in class saw my copy of the book and said something like, "So you like highlighting?" I explained that I had bought a used copy and it was like that when I bought it.

Hehe, yes it does seem strange to highlight a whole page... Many times
the used books had the important (test-able!) info highlighted, and if
you were real lucky, the margin scribbles were still legible and
    relevant. :-)

I always bought used books in college. They were MUCH cheaper and I felt if someone highlighted something it must be important so I figured that was a benefit to me. If They had no used books then I was forced to buy new. That pissed me off because I wouldn't use a highlighter cause I wanted to get the most money for it when I sold it used. to use, changed back to their previous semester's book, and there was no
    way to resell it.

I had that happen in an Accounting class. We were supposedly going to be
able to use it for the next class (Accounting II). That turned out false,
I could not resell the book, and wound up donating it to the library since
it was not a book I wanted to keep.

I kept my Astronomy and Geography textbooks.

I feel like there should be a way for college students to borrow their textbooks rather than buy them, and perhaps that would be less expensive. Most of the time, students don't need to keep the textbooks (though it would be good to still have the option to buy them).

You said it yourself that highlighting was a bonus feature in a
used textbook. So, you could have marketed your used books the
    same way! :D

My recollection, which might be wrong, was that the places that bought used books from the students would not pay as much for ones that had been highlighted, marked up, etc.

That's why I didn't highlight new books. But it had a negative effect on my course work

College is not like the public schools we went to paid by tax dollars. Their all a money making scheme. I get approved for a $20,000 loan but I still have to buy books? Talk about a scheme. Pay for parking. Pay $20.00 for a burger and fries in the school cafeteria. It's school not a 49er game.

It's usually professors who write their own textbooks as a means of
additional income. I remember a physics professor who did minor upgrades
to a spiral bound "text book" complete with his own hand drawn scribbles pretending to be diagrams. He bumped the version number and made veiled
threats to students who tried using the "old" edition.

Most of the content and page numbers were identical. We'd all had to
buy the previous edition in the fall. Bastard didn't even have the
decency to wait until the beginning of the school year to bump the
    edition.

Some schools might do that, but I suspect it is a money maker for someone.
A couple of the smaller state schools here, as a way to compete with the
two largest, have started giving their students their textbooks as
"covered" by their tuition. As best as I can tell, the tuition at those schools is still less than their larger brothers. The one thing I am not
clear on is whether or not that program is for all students, or just the freshman class.

The way they advertise it, you get there for the semester and your books
are either already in your room, or ready for you to pick up.

In a way, it is, but for some buying the expensive books themselves vs.
knowing it is taken care of might be a tipping point as to which school they choose.

eBook readers are wonderful if you are reading the book from cover to cover but as soon as you need to jump around in the book, they get cumbersome very quickly.

I get this, I really do.

This is a fine example of where different people's physical capabilities come into play.

Having been partially blind and fine/gross motor impaired all my life, print books have always been a struggle. You can't resize the font in a print book, and you can't do a keyword search either :)

There are all kinds of reasons why people might prefer them, and I would never try to convince them otherwise, because you need to do what works for YOU, but for me? ebooks all the way :)

The only exception is comics and graphic novels, where I still vastly prefer the printed page, in part due to the rendering of the art.
